Abstract

This research is discusses to analyze the strategies used and the difficulties of fourth semester English students at UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu in translating English idioms into Indonesian. This aims to find out: 1) what strategies students use to translate English idioms in Indonesia, and 2) to find out students' difficulties in translating English idioms into Indonesian. This research was conducted using qualitative descriptive research methods. 40 English Language Education students in the 4th semester of the 2022/2023 academic year were taken as samples for this research using purposive sampling. The research data collection instruments were documents containing idioms and interviews consisting of five questions about the difficulty of translating English idioms into Indonesian. From data analysis, this research reveals that the main difficulty experienced by students in translating English idioms into Indonesian is the difficulty of identifying idioms contained in a sentence or text, and the difficulty in translating idioms due to the different languages, both in terms of sentence composition and vocabulary, as well as, Difficulty translating idioms if you don't understand the meaning of the text. then their strategy or way of overcoming the problem, by using help from the Google Translate application and by using the strategy of translation by paraphrase and using an idiom of similar meaning and form.
