Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of implementing Project- Based Learning (PBL) on the reading ability of eighth-grade students at SMPN 20 Kota Bengkulu. The PjBL model was chosen because it is believed to be able to increase students' engagement, creativity, and critical thinking skills through structured and contextual project activities. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasiexperimental design and a non-equivalent control group. The sample consisted of two eighth-grade classes: class VIII D as the experimental group and class VIII E as the control group, with a total of 58 students. The results showed that both the experimental and control groups experienced an increase in reading scores, but the increase in the experimental group was far more significant. The average pre-test score of the experimental group was 65.65 and increased to 78.48 on the posttest, while the control group increased from 61.10 to 73.93. The t-test showed a significance value below 0.05. With the t-test showed a significance value lower than 0.05. Thus, this study concludes that Project-Based Learning has a significant impact on improving students' reading achievment, thus PBL can be recommended as an effective learning model for improving students' literacy competencies at the junior high school level.
