Abstract
Vocabulary mastery is an important component in learning English because it supports students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. However, many students still experience difficulties in mastering vocabulary due to monotonous and less engaging teaching methods. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of using the TikTok application on students’ vocabulary mastery. This research employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design through pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was all eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Bengkulu City in the academic year 2024/2025, while the sample was class VIII G consisting of 33 students selected through purposive sampling technique. The data were collected through vocabulary tests and analyzed using normality tests, t-tests, F-tests (ANCOVA), and effect size (Partial Eta Squared). The results showed that the students’ mean score increased from 57.76 in the pre-test to 72.36 in the post-test. The result of the t-test showed that the t-count value was 20.521, which was higher than the t-table value of 2.037 (20.521 > 2.037) with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, meaning that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. In addition, the F-test result showed that the F-count value was 9.854 with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that there was a significant effect of the TikTok application on students’ vocabulary mastery. The magnitude of the effect was shown by the Partial Eta Squared value of 0.956, which was categorized as a very large effect. Therefore, it can be concluded that the TikTok application was effective in improving the vocabulary mastery of class VIII G students at SMPN 5 Bengkulu City.
