Abstract

This study aims to describe the approach taken by English teachers using elicitation techniques in EFL class interactions at MAN Rejang Lebong, and to find out the types of elicitation techniques used by teachers, as well as the challenges faced by teachers in using elicitation techniques. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive design model. Informants in this study were 2 English teachers who taught at MAN Rejang Lebong. and collection of data obtained by observation checklist, interviews and documentation. The data obtained were analyzed using triangulation techniques. There are 5 types of elicitation techniques described by experts but the results of the study show that there are 4 types of elicitation techniques used by English teachers at MAN Rejang Lebong, namely:asking questions, asking questions combined with pictures, asking questions combined with text/dialogues, and asking questions combined with non-verbal language. In addition, the challenges faced in the application of elicitation techniques such as lack ofvocabulary students master, elicitation techniques can be time-consuming, elicitation techniques do not always result in more student speaking time, and one student can dominate answering questions. However, researchers also found that there was stimulation by the teacher to students and good feedback from students. So it can be concluded that the elicitation technique is beneficial for teachers and students.
