Abstract

Reading assessment is important because, the score collected must be accurate and valid. This research aims to analyze the assessment techniques used by English teachers in assessing students' reading, what types of assessment teachers use and what reasons teachers use this type of reading assessment. This type of assessment is qualitative descriptive. The research instruments are observation, interviews and documentation. The subjects of this research were three English teachers as informants. The research results found that there were four assessment techniques used by teachers, namely, reading fluency, understanding words and texts, word identification and word clarification. The types of reading assessments that English teachers use are multiple choice questions, reordering sentences, descriptions according to pictures and inserting words/sentences in the text. The techniques and types of assessment used by English teachers can determine the extent of students' reading comprehension. Tests are ideal for measuring students' knowledge because they are easy to assess. Practicing students' reading comprehension in addition to helping teachers determine students' reading levels. Measuring students' reading achievement levels. Scientific understanding. and teachers find it easier to find out students' reading levels.
