Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of Inquiry-Based role play on students’ speaking ability, students’ interest, and students’ enthusiasm at the eighth-grade speaking of SMP Negeri 15 Kota Bengkulu. This research used a quasiexperimental design. The sample in this study were taken the population who were 46 students. Based on the results of Mann Whitney Independent Test, it is found that the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 < 0.05, so it can be concluded that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there was an effect of using Inquiry-Based STEM strategy to improve students’ speaking ability. The prove that Inquiry-Based role play gave positive effect towards student’s ability in speaking English can be seen from the calculation of pre-test and post-test result. In post test, the mean score in experimental group was higher than control group and it is higher from the pre-test result of experimental group itself. The mean score of the control group was also improved, but it did not keep up with the improvement of the experimental group. Therefore, it can be concluded that Inquiry-Based STEM strategy gives positive effect toward students’ speaking ability and is proved to be effective strategy in teaching speaking. Finally, it is suggested to English teachers to implement this strategy in teaching speaking.
