Abstract

This study aims to determine the factors that cause a lack of interest and motivation in learning English for students in rural areas, to be precise at SMA N 2 KOTA BENGKULU This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The informants in this study were teachers and students at SMA N 2 KOTA Bengkulu. Data collection techniques used are Test, Pretest, Treatment, and post test. The steps in analyzing the data are using data collection techniques, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Validity check by source and method triangulation. The results of this study indicate that in general the factors that cause students' lack of interest and motivation to learn English include 2 factors, namely: 1) Internal factors such as factors from within the students themselves, interest in learning, factors speaking English students, lack of interest with the topic of learning. 2) External factors which include family factors, school environmental factors and community environmental factors
