Abstract

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of metacognitive strategies in students' speaking abilities in looking at the speaking quality of ninth grade students at SMP Negeri 20 Bengkulu. This research uses a quasi-experimental method, where the population is ninth grade students in the first semester. The total population is 232 students divided into 8 Meanwhile, the sample was taken using purposive sampling, the sample was taken based on the average value of the class, the same number of students in the class and an even distribution of both male and female students, the sample was 61 students in two classes, each class numbering 30 and 31 students The data in this research was obtained or obtained using a speaking test and in its implementation using topics contained in the applicable and implemented by teachers at the school. Next, the first test, namely the pretest, is carried out using the oral or question and answer method using certain criteria, in the form of: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, understanding. After carrying out the pre-test, students in both classes were given learning before finally carrying out the post-test using the same method. The first test was carried out to obtain normality values for the two variables which showed that the significance value in the pretest normality test was 0.230 > 0.05, which means the data had a residue above normal. Likewise with the normality test on posttest data where the significance value on the posttest normality test is 0.115 > 0.05, which means the data above has a normal residual. After carrying out the normality test, a homogeneity test is then carried out to see whether the two variables studied are homogeneous or not. Where the significance in the pretest homogeneity test is 0.563 > 0.05, which means the data above is homogeneous or the same. with a homogeneity test on the posttest where the significance value on the posttest homogeneity test is 0.130 > 0.05, which means the data above is homogeneous or the same. Next is the Paired Sample T-test test xviii method where in the experimental class there is a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05 which states that the HA or Alternative Hypothesis is accepted and the HO or Null Hypothesis is rejected, which concludes that the results of the paired sample t test are the effectiveness of the experimental class in learning to improve speaking skills through metacognitive in grade 9 students of SMP N 20 Bengkulu.
