Abstract

This study addresses the gap by analyzing how Palestinian cartoons utilize visual symbols, emotional language, and rhetorical strategies to convey powerful sociopolitical messages. This research aims to examine the use of visual and linguistic elements in Palestinian cartoons to express sociopolitical ideologies and to explore the psycholinguistic implications of multimodal features on audience perception. This study employs a mixed-methods approach with Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) as the primary analytical framework. The instruments used include observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The research was conducted among fourth-semester students of the English Education Department at UIN Fatmawati Bengkulu, involving a total of 17 students. The results indicate that Palestinian cartoons powerfully convey sociopolitical ideologies through a combination of visuals and text. Symbols and emotional diction evoke empathy and critical awareness. These multimodal strategies assist in understanding language within real-life contexts. The analysis shows an improvement in students’ critical thinking and expressive abilities. The multimodal strategy based on Palestinian cartoons has proven effective in enhancing students’ comprehension. Through the integration of visual and linguistic elements, the cartoons evoke emotion, empathy, and social awareness of humanitarian issues among students. Moreover, this approach also accelerates language comprehension and encourages deeper cognitive engagement. Questionnaire data show that 83.1% of respondents believe the integration of text and image helps in understanding ideological messages and feel that the visual-linguistic combination evokes empathy. Pedagogically, these cartoons can be used to train students in critical thinking, contextual meaning interpretation, and social awareness.
