Abstract

This study addresses the gap in research on how the representation of female masculinity in Western films impacts students’ critical thinking skills. It aims to analyse the contribution of the Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) approach to gender understanding and argumentative writing ability. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining qualitative methods (observation, interviews, documentation) and quantitative data (questionnaires) involving 67 students. The results show that MCDA not only enhances argumentative writing skills but also fosters critical awareness of gender constructions. A total of 90% of students reported becoming more reflective and critical in their writing after analysing films. MCDA has proven effective in creating a multimodal learning environment that encourages active participation and critical thinking. This approach is recommended as a pedagogical strategy for teaching critical literacy and gender awareness.
