Abstract

This study investigates the teaching strategies employed by the English teacher and students’ perceptions of those strategies in English language learning at MTsN 1 Kota Bengkulu. The research aims to identify the types of teaching strategies applied in the classroom and to analyze how students perceive these strategies in relation to their English language learning. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The participants consisted of one English teacher and 36 ninth-grade students of class 9C at MTsN 1 Kota Bengkulu. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis supported by percentage calculations from questionnaire results. The findings reveal that the English teacher implemented various teaching strategies, including project-based learning, peer tutoring, mini-projects, interactive activities such as Text Songs, and outdoor learning activities. These strategies were applied flexibly to accommodate students’ learning needs and classroom conditions. The results of the questionnaire indicate that most students had positive perceptions of the teaching strategies. Students reported increased motivation, active participation, better collaboration, and improved understanding of English learning materials. They also perceived the learning process as more enjoyable, less monotonous, and more engaging. In conclusion, the teaching strategies employed by the English teacher at MTsN 1 Kota Bengkulu positively influenced students’ English language learning and were well received by the students. These findings suggest that the use of varied and interactive teaching strategies can enhance students’ motivation and engagement in learning English.
