Abstract

Reading instruction in the EFL context at the senior high school level continues to face challenges, particularly low reading comprehension and student motivation. Similar conditions are found at SMA Negeri 3 Kota Bengkulu, where teacher-centered instruction has not fully promoted active student engagement. Therefore, Project-Based Learning (PjBL) is considered a relevant approach that emphasizes student involvement, collaboration, and contextual use of texts. This study aims to analyze the implementation of PjBL in English reading instruction for eleventh-grade students, identify challenges and supporting factors, and explore teachers’ and students’ perceptions. Employing a qualitative descriptive case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, semistructured interviews, and document analysis. The findings indicate that PjBL encourages more active, collaborative, and contextual reading practices. However, several challenges remain, including limited instructional time, varied student abilities, and less optimal project-based assessment. Overall, PjBL is perceived positively and shows potential as an effective approach to enhance students’ motivation and reading comprehension when supported by careful planning and adequate teacher competence.
