Abstract

This qualitative exploratory study aimed to explore the experiences of eighth-semester English Education students at UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu regarding passive English language exposure through social media and to identify the benefits and challenges they experienced. The data were collected from eight students through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation and were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings showed that students experienced passive English language exposure through English-language content on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, primarily while using social media for entertainment and other everyday purposes. The exposure occurred through watching videos, listening to spoken English, and reading English captions or other written content. The findings also revealed several benefits, including increased familiarity with English, exposure to new vocabulary and internet slang, opportunities to experience English listening, and informal learning beyond the classroom. However, students also experienced challenges, particularly unfamiliar vocabulary, fast speech, different accents, and difficulty understanding certain contexts. To deal with these challenges, students used strategies such as relying on visual cues, checking comments, and rewatching content. Overall, passive English language exposure through social media provided students with continuous and informal encounters with English in their daily lives and contributed to their familiarity with the language outside the classroom.
