Abstract

This study aims to explore the reading habits of students with low interest in reading English texts, identify the factors influencing this low interest and the students’ reading habits, and determine how students approach English reading assignments despite their low interest in reading among eighth-grade students at SMPN 12 in Kota Bengkulu. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The research subjects consisted of ten students selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation. The results indicate that students’ reading habits remain low, characterized by limited reading frequency and duration, with reading activities generally performed only to fulfill school assignments. Low reading interest is influenced by internal factors including limited vocabulary, difficulty understanding texts, and low motivation as well as external factors, such as support from teachers and families, the learning environment, access to reading materials, and a preference for digital media. Despite their low interest in reading English texts, students still strive to complete reading assignments in various ways, such as using translation apps, asking teachers or friends for help, and looking up information or the meanings of words they do not understand. This study concludes that students’ reading habits and low interest in reading English texts are influenced by the interaction between internal and external factors. In addition, students with low interest in reading still employ various strategies to tackle and complete English reading assignments. Therefore, ongoing support from schools, teachers, families, and students is needed to increase interest and foster better reading habits.
