Abstract

The knowledge of phonetic symbols is an important tool for understanding and producing English speech sounds accurately. This study aimed to determine the correlation between students’ knowledge of English consonant phonetic symbols and their pronunciation accuracy among fifth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at State Islamic University of Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu. A quantitative correlational approach was used with 20 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a 50-item multiple-choice phonetic symbols test and an oral pronunciation test assessed by two raters. Data were analyzed using Pearson Product-Moment Correlation through SPSS, preceded by normality and linearity tests. The results showed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.762, p = 0.000 < 0.05), with a coefficient of determination of 58.1%. This indicates that students with greater knowledge of IPA consonant symbols tend to have higher pronunciation accuracy, highlighting the importance of phonetic instruction in English Education programs.
