Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of self-efficacy perceptions on the English writing ability of fourth-semester students of the English Language Study Program at UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu. In the context of English writing, self-efficacy plays an important role because writing requires self-confidence, mastery of grammar, vocabulary knowledge, organization of ideas, and the ability to express thoughts clearly in written form. This study uses a quantitative method with a descriptive approach and field research design. The population of this study consisted of all fourth-semester students of the English Language Study Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Tadris, UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu, with a total of 61 students. The sampling technique used was total sampling, so that all members of the population were sampled. Data were collected through a questionnaire using a Likert scale and supported by documentation. The instrument was tested using validity and reliability tests, while data analysis included descriptive statistics, normality tests, linearity tests, t-tests, and coefficient of determination (R²) tests using SPSS 25. The results showed that self-efficacy has a positive influence on students' English writing ability. The t-test results showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05 and t-count 8.038 > t-table 1.999. The coefficient of determination (R²) was 0.523, meaning that self-efficacy contributed 52.3% to students' English writing ability, while the remaining 47.7% was influenced by other factors outside this study. Therefore, self-efficacy is an important factor in improving students' English writing ability, because students with higher self-confidence tend to perform better in writing tasks.
