Abstract

This study aimed to improve the vocabulary memorization of fifth-grade students’ at SDN 071 Bengkulu Utara by using The Loud House cartoon as an audio-visual learning medium. The research focused on improving student’ ability to recognize word meanings, understand vocabulary in context, and recall English vocabulary. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) adapted from Arikunto, Suhardjono, and Supardi (2010), consisting of two cycles with the stages of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The participants were 19 fifth-grade students. The research instruments included vocabulary tests, classroom observation, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive analysis by comparing students' mean scores and learning achievement in each cycle. The findings showed that the implementation of The Loud House cartoon successfully improved students' vocabulary memorization. The students' mean score increased from 64.21 in Cycle I to 79.79 in Cycle II, showing an improvement of 15.58 points. In addition, 16 out of 19 students (84.21%) achieved the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM) of 75 in Cycle II, indicating that the success criteria of the classroom action research had been achieved. Classroom observation also revealed that students` became more active, enthusiastic, and confident during the learning process. They participated actively in answering questions, repeating vocabulary, and identifying words from the cartoon scenes.
