Abstract

Critical gender literacy is important for university students because it helps them understand gender stereotypes, gender representations, and power relations in literary texts. However, many EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students still have difficulties critically understanding gender issues and expressing their ideas in argumentative essays. This study aimed to investigate the contribution of extensive reading using drama plays to students’ critical gender literacy and argumentative essay writing skills. The study involved fourth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and argumentative writing tests. The data were analyzed using thematic and descriptive analysis. The findings showed that extensive reading through drama plays contributed to increased student engagement, improved understanding of gender issues, and the ability to produce more organized and evidence-based argumentative essays. The students were able to identify gender stereotypes, discuss hegemonic masculinity and power relations, and use evidence from drama texts to support their arguments. In conclusion, extensive reading through drama plays contributed to the development of students’ critical gender literacy and argumentative writing skills in English language learning.
