Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the significant relationship between students' vocabulary mastery and their speaking skills at SMA N 9 Bengkulu City. The method used is a quantitative descriptive method through a correlation study. The data was collected through vocabulary mastery tests and speaking skill tests as well as documentation for the 10th grade students of SMA N 9 Bengkulu City. This research used correlational research. The population of this study were students of 10th grade SMA N 9 Bengkulu City. 20 students were involved in the research and data were analyzed by test analysis. The final result of the analysis shows that there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and students' speaking skills. This is reasonable because the average student vocabulary mastery is 66.20. While the value of students' speaking skills is 57.35. After analyzing these results using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation formula, you can imagine the correlation score is 0.520. In the correlation index table it can be concluded that this correlation level is 0.40 – 0.60, based on the Product Moment criteria table r is in moderate correlation. That is, when students have good vocabulary mastery, their speaking skills will also be poor.
