Abstract

This study aims to improve the English speaking skills of class seventh C students of SMP Negeri 6 Bengkulu through the use of information-gap technique technique during the teaching and learning process. This type of research is classroom action research which consists of three cycles. The instruments used were observation sheets, interview guides, and documentation. Data is collected in two forms: qualitative (through interviews and observation) . Qualitative data were analyzed through data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions, while quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive techniques to obtain the mean. The information gap technique is significant for improving the speaking skills of class SEVENTH students of SMP N 6 Bengkulu City for the 2021/2022 academic year and based on qualitative data, pre-communicative technique improve students' grammatical competence, while practice improves their accuracy and fluency. In addition, information-gap technique can attract students' attention and make them calmer, more focused during class, and enthusiastic about participating in teaching and learning technique. Based on quantitative data, the average score of students' speaking skills increased from 24.84 in cycle 1 to 74.19 in cycle 3.
