Abstract

The aims of this research are to identify conversations that are indicated positive and negative face and to describe the application of teaching speaking in Junior High School using positive and negative faces found in When English Rings A Bell textbook.The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method to conduct this research. The object of this research is textbook, and the data sources are the conversations in When English Rings A Bell textbook containing positive and negative face. After collecting the data, the reseacher classified the data into positive and negative faceThe result of the thesis showed that there were 52 data containing positive and negative face in When English Rings A Bell textbook which positive faces appear 44 times (84.62%) and negative faces appear 8 times (15.38%). It means that positive faces are used more than negative faces in When English Rings A Bell textbook.
