Abstract

This research aimed to explain the implementation of Mind Mapping technique in improving students' speaking skills. A collaborative Classroom Action Research design, based on the Kemmis and McTaggart (2014) model, was conducted over two cycles. Data were collected through speaking tests, field notes, and interviews, then assessed using Heaton's (1988) rubric, which covers four components: fluency, accuracy, pronunciation, and comprehensibility. The success criterion was set at a minimum of 70% of students achieving a score of 70. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students' speaking ability after the application of Mind Mapping. In Cycle 1, the average score was 63.6, with only 30.6% of students meeting the criterion. Following improvements in Cycle 2 such as the use of dictionaries, more varied topics, and additional individual practice time the average score rose to 75.1, with 86.1% of students achieving the target. All four speaking components improved, with comprehensibility showing the most significant gain (+16 points), followed by fluency (+12), pronunciation (+10), and accuracy (+8). This study concludes that Mind Mapping is effective in enhancing students' speaking skills by helping them visually organize ideas, reducing cognitive load and anxiety, and providing a structured thinking framework. This research offers empirical evidence in the secondary education context and provides practical implications for English teachers in implementing visual-based pre-speaking strategies.
