Abstract

The development of speaking skills is often hampered by limited exposure to authentic language. This study aims to explore students' perceptions and experiences regarding the habit of watching English-language films as a natural strategy for developing speaking skills. This qualitative phenomenological study involved 16 English Language Education students from UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu with good speaking skills, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The results showed that all participants perceived this habit as a self-directed learning strategy, not simply entertainment. This habit significantly improved micro-skills (vocabulary and pronunciation) through exposure to comprehensible input and shadowing techniques. Conversely, improvements in macro-skills (fluency and confidence) were conditional, relying heavily on students' efforts to transform passive input into driven output through active practices such as self-talk or creating vlogs. It concluded that English-language films are an effective pedagogical catalyst, but holistic development of speaking skills still requires active learning strategies and learner autonomy.
