Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component of English language learning that supports the development of all language skills, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. However, many junior high school students in Indonesia still have limited vocabularies due to conventional teaching methods that lack engagement and interactivity. This study aims to determine the effect of using TikTok educational videos on the English vocabulary proficiency of seventh-grade students at MTs Qaryatul Jihad in Central Bengkulu. This study employed a quantitative approach with a “quasi-experimental” design (non-equivalent control group design). The sample consisted of 36 students, comprising 18 students from 7th Grade Class A as the experimental group and 18 students from 7th Grade Class B as the control group. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests using a multiple-choice test consisting of 37 valid items, then analyzed using the “Independent Samples t-test” and ANCOVA with the aid of SPSS version 26. The results of the study indicate that the use of TikTok educational videos has a significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery. The results of the “Independent Samples t-test” showed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), so the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected. The ANCOVA results also showed that the use of TikTok educational videos had an effect on students’ vocabulary mastery, with a “Partial Eta Squared” value of 0.446. Thus, it can be concluded that TikTok educational videos are effective as a learning medium for improving students’ English vocabulary mastery.
