Abstract

Teaching English to young learners is not an easy task. Otherwise to use appropriate learning strategies so the students are engaged in teaching reading. This study aims to figure out the strategies used by English teachers in teaching reading, how they applied the strategies in teaching reading and what are the dominant strategies used in teaching reading. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The instrument of the research were observations, interviews, and documentation. The subject of this study were two English teacher as informants. The result of the data were analyzed and broken down into three stages; they were Data Reduction, Data Display, and Drawing Conclusion or Interpretation. The result showed that the teacher one used several strategies in teaching reading. The strategies were brainstorming, reading aloud, asking for specific information, dictionaries, reread for checking comprehension, evaluating comprehension in particular tasks and asking questions for specific information. While the teacher two used seven strategies. They were brainstorming, dictionaries, asking for specific information, reading aloud, reread for checking comprehension, evaluating comprehension in particular tasks, and asking questions for specific information. Both teachers applied and combined the strategies divided into three stages of teaching reading. The stages were pre-reading stage, while reading stage, and post reading stage. The dominant strategies used by the teacher were reading aloud, dictionaries, and evaluating in particular task.
