Abstract
This research was conducted based on the students’ statement about facing some problem in their writing production such as grammatical errors found by writing class lecturers and statements from students who had difficulty with grammar in their writing. This research aims to find out about types of language error and factors of language error in fourth semester students’ writing at English education study program. This research applied descriptive qualitative method with error analysis approach. The research was conducted at English Education study program, UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu, 19 students from 4th semester were taken as respondents for the test and 10 students have been chosen randomly as the interviewees. The data collection techniques used test and interview. Based on the data analysis from the test were found that there are 22 omission errors (22%) made by the students, 31 Addition Errors (31 %), 43 Selection errors (43%) and 4 Ordering errors (4%). The most commonly error found is selection error with 43 data (43%). Besides, the interview result shows that the main factors causing language error is the intralingual transfer which is their limited knowledge about English language rules, especially grammar that lead them to overgeneralize the rules. Then, the communication strategies factors where students only have limited vocabularies in English, and also context of learning and interlingual transfer are some factors causing language error. For this, students should practice more on their writing in order to make them familiar with the English language rules and to gain more exposure of English vocabularies.
