Abstract

This research aims to find out whether or not local culture as material teaching affects students‘ speaking proficiency. This research is quantitative research that uses quasi-experimental research. The subjects of this research were 8th-grade students at PPS Hidaytul Qomariyah Bengkulu City, a total of 44 students. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling and took two classes as samples. Class 8A is an experimental class consisting of 22 students while class 8B is a control class consisting of 22 students. The instrument used for collecting the data is tested. Paired sample t-test was used to analyze the data. In this research, based on the descriptive analysis, the researcher found that the mean score of the post-test, which is 59.64, is higher than the mean score of the pre-test which is 48.55. Moreover, based on the computation of paired sample ttest, the Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000. It was higher than 0.05. So, there is a significant difference in students‘ speaking proficiency compared to before, after integrating local culture as teaching materials.
