Abstract

This study aims to explain the types of difficulties experienced by eleventh-grade students in mastering English vocabulary and the factors causing those difficulties at MAN 1 Kota Bengkulu. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach involving six eleventh-grade students and two English teachers as informants. Data were collected through classroom observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model. The findings show that students experienced difficulties in five aspects of vocabulary mastery: understanding word meanings, pronunciation, spelling, using vocabulary in context, and remembering vocabulary. Among these aspects, remembering vocabulary was the most prominent difficulty, followed by understanding word meanings. Students often forget words they had previously learned and have difficulty determining word meanings in different contexts. The findings also indicate that these difficulties were influenced by several factors, especially limited learning media and lack of motivation. Limited learning media reduced opportunities for vocabulary practice, while low motivation affected students' participation and interest in learning vocabulary. Therefore, students' vocabulary difficulties are closely related to both aspects of vocabulary instruction and factors within the learning environment.
