Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problem of students’ low English speaking performance. Many students were reluctant to express ideas, answer questions, or participate in discussions due to fear of making errors and lack of confidence in their performance. Therefore, this research aimed to determine the effect of the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) strategy on students’ speaking performance at the eleventh grade of SMAN 6 Seluma in the academic year 2025/2026. This study used a nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design, a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The study involved 28 students in the experimental class and 26 students in the control class at SMAN 6 Seluma. The control group received the Discovery Learning method, while the experimental group used the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) strategy. Data were obtained from students’ pretest and post-test scores after the treatment and analyzed using the Independent Samples T-test and N-Gain analysis. The results showed that the experimental class achieved a higher mean post-test score (74.36) than the control class (49.38). The Independent Samples T-test showed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a significant effect of the TPS strategy on students’ speaking performance. The N-Gain scores were 57.32% for the experimental group and 4.23% for the control group, indicating that students’ speaking performance was significantly and favorably affected by the Think-Pair-Share strategy.
