Abstract

The pedagogical impact of local language use on vocabulary knowledge and speaking fluency among young learners in non-formal EFL contexts remains underexplored. This study investigates how local language use affects EFYL students’ vocabulary knowledge and speaking fluency at LKP Ambassador Bengkulu. A qualitative case study design was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, then thematically analyzed. The findings show that vocabulary mastery supports speaking fluency by improving concept understanding, confidence, and classroom participation. Fluency is influenced by vocabulary breadth, contextual knowledge, retrieval ability, variation, and accuracy, with vocabulary understanding and retrieval having the strongest effects. The study also reveals that strategic local language use enhances learners’ confidence, reduces speaking anxiety, and supports vocabulary acquisition in non-formal EFL classes. These findings highlight the importance of carefully integrating local language to support vocabulary and speaking development and encourage further research on other factors affecting speaking fluency in diverse learning contexts.
