Abstract

This research responds to a persistent difficulty observed among seventh-grade learners at SMP Negeri 11 Bengkulu Tengah, namely their underdeveloped English Listening competence. Prior to the intervention, several contributing factors were identified: minimal use of digital tools during instruction, an overreliance on repetitive conventional teaching techniques, and a general lack of student enthusiasm that often resulted in passive engagement during lessons. To address these issues, a quantitative approach employing a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design was applied, aiming to examine whether the Learning English Podcast (LEP) could produce a measurable improvement in the listening performance of seventh grades at SMPN 11 Bengkulu Tengah during the 2025/2026 academic year. Forty students were purposively selected and divided into two groups; Class VII A as the experiment group and Class VII B as the control group, with data collected through a 30 item of multiple-choice listening test. Finding revealed a marked gain in listening achievement among students exposed to LEP: their posttest average reached 72.25, considerably higher than the control group‘s 43.30. An independent sample T-test confirmed that this difference was statically significant (p <0.001, sig. 2 tailed < 0.05). these result collectively support the conclusion that LEP is an effective medium for strengthening student‘s listening skills, particularly their ability to grasp main ideas, identify specific details, build vocabulary and interpret meaning in spoken conversation.
